Women Against Violent Language
Warning! This is a women-only space!
Campaigns
WAVL campaigns against the use of language around a number of different issues.

We advise organisations and individuals on the correct, woman-positive, terminology to use.

To date we have tackled: abortion, disability, female genital mutilation, foot-binding, sado-masochism, pornography, racism, rape and sexual abuse.

Cunt
WAVL have recently launched a successful letter-writing campaign against the author Stewart Home and his recent book, entitled "Cunt" (May 1999, Do Not Press, London, England). Home is well-known for his woman-hating prose and "Cunt" is the latest in a long line of publications which sully womanhood through violent language. We believe the title alone makes a mockery of women's primordial power of reproduction, as well as cheapening this very private and personal aspect of our bodies. We hape that we can diminish Home's book sales by putting pressure on reviewers and publicists, and mounting Off The Shelves actions once the book is available.

WAVL and the author are both based in London's East End, and it is because this book is so close to home that we were interested in fighting back. We know only too well the effect on a local community of the violent language celebrated in this book.
