For Journalists and Media

Many thanks for being interested in my work. I often get requests from journalists and media makers, particularly those who want to produce programmes and articles about fat. I support this work where I can, but there are some things to consider before you contact me. I am happy to negotiate around this stuff.

Things I support

Work that is ethically engaged and invested in social change.

Work by people I already know and respect.

Work by people who have personal connections to the communities, discourses and histories of which I am a part.

Work that respects and remunerates my own expertise and the knowledge and expertise of my communities.

Work where I will have at least some editorial control.

Things I don’t support

Programmes and articles that patronise fat people as fascinating/pitiable objects or are exploitative. This includes reality shows, obesity shockumentaries, or debates with fatphobes. I do not reply to messages asking me to support these things.

I won’t pass on people’s private details or do your research for you.

I am not available for unpaid consultancy, aka “a quick chat”. We can negotiate rates if you are interested in my expertise.

If you would like to know more about fat and media engagement, which goes some way to explaining my own relationship to media, download the paper: No More Stitch-Ups! Developing Media Literacy Through Fat Activist Community Research (.pdf, 270kb) There is also a blog post about it.

Thank you.
